Third Eye

Marble – 2013

The third eye is used as a symbol in many religions, including the Egyptian, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. The common denominator is the description of a state of illumination achieved through meditation.

The primary objective of practicing meditation is to activate the pineal gland. The gland inside the brain has the shape of a cone and the size of a grain, and presides over many vital functions. For this reason the symbol of the third eye is a pine cone.

The structure of the sculpture tries to transfer into its volumes a force of infinite signification, that seamlessly moves from the volumes created by the mass and the voids of the third eye in marble to the symbolism of the frame made of steel and plexiglass. The two steel bars represent the material human eyes, while the central plexiglass bar, with its transparency, stands for the third eye open to illumination.
